There is no official PS6 release date. As of October 2026, Sony has not announced the PlayStation 6 by name, has not shown the hardware, and has said on the record that it has not decided when to launch its next console or what to charge for it.

What we do have is a short list of official statements, one solid Bloomberg report, and a steady flow of hardware leaks. Put together, they point to a launch no earlier than late 2027, with 2028 now the more likely year. Here is everything, sorted by how much you can trust it.

Key takeaways
  • Sony has not announced a PS6 release date. CEO Hiroki Totoki said on May 8, 2026 that the launch timing and price are not yet decided.
  • Bloomberg reported in February 2026 that Sony is considering pushing the next PlayStation to 2028 or even 2029 because of soaring memory prices.
  • Mark Cerny said in October 2025 that the graphics tech from Project Amethyst, a joint project with AMD, is headed to a future console in a few years.
  • Leaks describe an AMD chip codenamed Orion with Zen 6 CPU cores, an RDNA 5 GPU around 40 TFLOPS, and PS4 and PS5 backward compatibility. None of it is confirmed by Sony.
  • No price is confirmed. Sony says it does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses, and the PS5 Pro already costs $899.99 in the US.

What Sony Has Officially Said

Sony's own statements are few, but they matter more than any leak.

"Not yet decided" (May 2026)

On Sony's FY2025 earnings call on May 8, 2026, president and CEO Hiroki Totoki discussed how rising memory prices affect the next console. As widely reported, he said: "We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices."

He added that Sony expects memory prices to stay high through its fiscal year 2027, which runs to March 2028, and that it will look at cost cuts, sales strategy and even changes to its business model for the next console while it watches how conditions develop. That is the clearest signal that the date is still open.

No big hardware losses (June 2026)

In a Q&A from Sony's 2026 Business Segment Meeting, published in late June 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino said: "As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses." He also said it is "not realistic" for Sony to absorb every increase in component costs. In plain terms, Sony is not planning to sell the next console far below what it costs to build.

Project Amethyst (October 2025)

In October 2025, PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny and AMD's Jack Huynh presented Project Amethyst, a joint effort on future graphics hardware. They showed three features:

  • Neural Arrays: GPU compute units work together on machine learning tasks, aimed at better upscaling and denoising.
  • Radiance Cores: dedicated hardware for ray tracing and path tracing.
  • Universal Compression: compresses data on its way to memory to save bandwidth.

Cerny closed by saying the features "only exist in simulation right now" and that he is excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years' time. Sony never said PS6, but this is the closest thing to an official preview of the next PlayStation's graphics.

Why Sony avoids the name PS6

Sony's financial results and investor answers refer to a "next-generation platform" or "new console". The PS6 name is what everyone expects, but Sony has not used it officially yet.

The Release Window: 2027, 2028 or 2029?

For years, the default assumption was 2027. Sony launched the PS3 in November 2006, the PS4 in November 2013 and the PS5 in November 2020, so a seven-year gap pointed to late 2027.

ConsoleUS launchGap from previous
PS3November 17, 2006n/a
PS4November 15, 20137 years
PS5November 12, 20207 years
PS5 ProNovember 7, 2024Mid-generation refresh
PS6Not announced7 years would mean late 2027

Launch dates are Sony's US release dates. Table compiled October 7, 2026.

That timeline changed in February 2026. Bloomberg reported that Sony is "considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console to 2028 or even 2029", citing people familiar with the company's thinking. The reason is the price of memory. AI data centres are buying RAM and storage in huge volumes, and consoles need a lot of both.

Three months later, Totoki's "not yet decided" comment and his warning about memory prices lasting into fiscal 2027 lined up with that report. Sony did not deny it.

On the other side, hardware leakers still describe a 2027 schedule. In September 2026, the leaker Kepler_L2 claimed on the NeoGAF forum that the PS6 chip is already being taped out, meaning the design is finished and going to the factory for test production. This is unconfirmed, and a taped-out chip does not set a launch date, but it would mean the hardware is well along.

Our read
  • A late 2027 launch is still possible if memory prices ease, but Sony has given no sign it is locked in.
  • 2028 is the most likely year based on the Bloomberg report and Sony's own cost warnings.
  • 2029 is the outside case if memory prices stay high for longer.
  • Expect an official reveal months before launch. Mark Cerny first described the PS5 hardware in April 2019, about 19 months before its November 2020 launch.

What Xbox is doing

Microsoft is further ahead on paper. At GDC on March 11, 2026, Jason Ronald, Xbox's VP of next generation, detailed Project Helix, the next Xbox console, built on a custom AMD chip. Microsoft says it plans to ship alpha hardware to developers "beginning in 2027" but has not given a consumer launch date. Separately, AMD CEO Lisa Su said on AMD's February 2026 earnings call that the next-gen Xbox chip is "progressing well to support a launch in 2027". If Xbox launches first, Sony may feel pressure not to slip too far.

PS6 Price: What to Expect

Sony has not announced a price and says it has not decided one. Here is what shapes it.

  • Sony will not take big losses. Its June 2026 statement rules out a console priced far below cost.
  • Memory is the problem. RAM and storage costs are the main reason for the reported delay, and Sony raised PS5 prices worldwide in April 2026, citing global economic pressures.
  • The PS5 Pro sets the floor. Sony's official US price for the PS5 Pro went to $899.99 on April 2, 2026, per the PlayStation Blog. A new generation is unlikely to start much lower than the current top model.
  • $1,000 is being discussed. The leaker Kepler_L2 claims the PS6 bill of materials (what the parts cost to build) has risen from an earlier estimate of about $760 to around $960 in 2026, driven by memory prices. That figure is unconfirmed. Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden told Kotaku in July 2026 that better graphics alone may not convince buyers to spend $1,000.
Rumour, not a price

No PS6 price has been confirmed or leaked from Sony. The $1,000 figure comes from a leaked parts estimate and is an industry talking point. Sony also said it will consider changes to how it sells the next console, which could mean bundles, subscriptions or different models at different prices. Sony has not said which.

PS6 Specs: What the Leaks Say

Everything in this section is unconfirmed rumour. Most of it comes from two sources: the YouTube channel Moore's Law Is Dead, which says its 2025 leak came from AMD material dating to 2023, and the leaker Kepler_L2, who has a good track record on AMD hardware.

PartRumoured PS6 specPS5 for comparison
Chip codenameOrion (AMD)Not public
CPU8 Zen 6 cores8 Zen 2 cores, up to 3.5GHz
GPURDNA 5, 54 compute units (52 active) at 2.6 to 3GHz36 compute units at up to 2.23GHz
GPU computeAbout 40 TFLOPS10.28 TFLOPS
MemoryGDDR716GB GDDR6

PS6 column: Moore's Law Is Dead and Kepler_L2 leaks, 2025 to September 2026, unconfirmed. PS5 column: Sony's official spec sheet.

The earlier Moore's Law Is Dead leak listed 40 to 48 compute units, a power target of about 160W, and raster performance about three times the PS5 and about double the PS5 Pro, with bigger gains in ray tracing. That matches the direction of Project Amethyst, where Radiance Cores are dedicated to ray tracing.

PS6 vs Xbox Project Helix

Kepler_L2 also claimed in September 2026 that the Project Helix chip is rated at about 56 TFLOPS, roughly 40 percent more than the PS6's 40. Treat that comparison with care. TFLOPS measure raw compute, not real game performance, and they ignore memory bandwidth, ray tracing hardware and software.

A PS6 handheld

The Moore's Law Is Dead leak also describes a second device codenamed Canis: a portable PS6 with 4 Zen 6c CPU cores, 12 to 20 RDNA 5 compute units, LPDDR5X memory and a 15W power target. It would reportedly run at about half the raster performance of a PS5 and play PS4 and PS5 games. Sony has not confirmed any handheld beyond the PlayStation Portal, which only streams games from a PS5.

Will the PS6 Play PS5 and PS4 Games?

Probably, but Sony has not said so.

  • The rumour: the Moore's Law Is Dead leak, which it says is based on AMD material from 2023, lists PS4 and PS5 backward compatibility for both the PS6 and the Canis handheld.
  • The precedent: the PS5 plays almost all PS4 games, and Sony built the PS5 Pro on the same architecture. Staying with AMD and x86 again makes compatibility much easier.
  • The competitor: Microsoft has already committed Project Helix to playing games across four generations of Xbox, which raises the bar for Sony.

The leaked material is years old, so plans can change. Until Sony confirms it, treat backward compatibility as very likely, not certain.

Should You Buy a PS5 or PS5 Pro Now?

If you want to play now, the PS6 is too far away to wait for. Even the most optimistic timeline puts it at least a year out, and a 2028 launch is more likely.

If backward compatibility holds, everything you buy on PS5 should carry over when you do upgrade.

Confirmed vs not confirmed

Confirmed: Sony has not decided the launch timing or price of its next console (May 8, 2026). Sony does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses (June 2026). Project Amethyst tech is headed to a future console in a few years (October 2025). Microsoft plans to ship Project Helix alpha dev kits from 2027.

Not confirmed: The PS6 name, any release year, the price, the Orion and Canis specs, backward compatibility, and the handheld. The Bloomberg 2028 to 2029 report cites unnamed sources and Sony has not commented on it.

FAQs

When is the PS6 coming out?

Sony has not announced a release date. CEO Hiroki Totoki said in May 2026 that the timing is not decided. Bloomberg reported in February 2026 that Sony is considering 2028 or 2029, while leakers still mention late 2027. 2028 is the most likely year based on current reports.

Has Sony confirmed the PS6?

Not by name. Sony refers to a "next-generation platform" or "new console" in investor materials, and Mark Cerny has talked about technology for "a future console". The PS6 has not been formally announced or shown.

How much will the PS6 cost?

No price has been announced. Sony says it does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses, and the PS5 Pro already lists at $899.99 in the US after the April 2026 increase. A leaked parts estimate of around $960 is not a retail price.

Why is the PS6 delayed?

Bloomberg reported that soaring memory and storage prices, driven by AI data centre demand, are why Sony is considering a 2028 or 2029 launch. Sony itself expects memory prices to stay high through its fiscal year 2027.

Will the PS6 be backward compatible with PS5 games?

It is expected but not confirmed. A leak from Moore's Law Is Dead, based on 2023 AMD material, lists PS4 and PS5 compatibility for the PS6 and a handheld. Sony has stayed with AMD hardware, which makes compatibility easier.

Is there a PS6 handheld?

Leaks from Moore's Law Is Dead describe a portable model codenamed Canis that plays PS4 and PS5 games at about half the power of a PS5. Sony has not confirmed it. The only current PlayStation handheld is the PlayStation Portal, which streams from a PS5.

Should I wait for the PS6 or buy a PS5 Pro?

If you want to play this year or next, buy now. The PS6 is at least a year away and likely longer, and if backward compatibility holds, your PS5 library should carry over.
