The PlayStation 5 Pro has been hard to buy in the US since late August. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026, and within days the $899.99 console was gone from Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon and PlayStation Direct. Six weeks later it is still missing, GameStop is charging $1,400 for a used one, and Sony is rationing units in Japan.
If you want a console for GTA 6 on November 19, here is what is happening, what the Pro costs right now, and whether you should pay the markup or buy a base PS5 instead.
- The PS5 Pro sold out at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon and PlayStation Direct in the US within days of the August 27 GTA 6 Extended Look on Netflix.
- GameStop now prices used PS5 Pro consoles at $1,400, about $500 over the $899.99 list price, per Kotaku on October 6, 2026. New units are out of stock there too.
- Sony Japan is selling the Pro by lottery to players with 60+ hours of PS4 or PS5 playtime in the last two years. Applications closed October 7.
- A Sony memo reported in September says Pro supply stays tight through early 2027 at the earliest.
- GTA 6 targets 30fps on consoles, and the Pro is not expected to change that. A base PS5 at list price is the better buy for most people.
Why the PS5 Pro Is Sold Out
The trigger was GTA 6. Rockstar's Extended Look premiered on Netflix at 3pm ET on August 27, six hours before it reached YouTube, and the footage was captured on a PlayStation 5. Netflix says it topped its English film list with 31.1 million views.
That demand landed on a console that was not in deep supply to begin with. GTAboom and GamesRadar+ both reported Best Buy and Target selling through their stock within roughly 48 hours of the premiere, with Amazon and Walmart left showing only third-party sellers.
Sony has not made a public statement in the US. In September, German site Playfront reported a Sony memo to distributors blaming "temporary market supply constraints and high demand," and warning the shortage would last "through early 2027 at the earliest," per PlayStation LifeStyle on September 18, 2026. The memo has not been published in full, and it is not clear whether it covers only Europe or all regions.
What a PS5 Pro Costs Right Now
Sony's official prices have not moved since the April 2 increase announced on the PlayStation Blog. The problem is finding a unit at those prices.
| Where | Price | Status |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro list price (US) | $899.99 | Sold out at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon, PlayStation Direct |
| GameStop, used PS5 Pro | $1,400 (up to $1,500 for some versions) | Out of stock online on October 6 |
| GameStop, new PS5 Pro | $899.99 | Out of stock online |
| Third-party sellers on Amazon and Walmart | $1,300 to $1,400+ | Available, not sold by the retailer |
| PS5 Pro list price (UK) | £789.99 | No widespread sellout reported |
| PS5 Pro list price (EU) | €899.99 | Supply reported as tight |
| PS5 Pro list price (Japan) | ¥137,980 | Sony Store lottery only |
List prices: PlayStation Blog, March 27, 2026 (effective April 2). GameStop prices: Kotaku, October 6, 2026. Third-party prices: GamesRadar+ and GTAboom, August 31, 2026, and Kotaku, October 6, 2026. Status checked October 8, 2026.
GameStop's $1,400 used PS5 Pro
Kotaku reported on October 6, 2026 that GameStop raised its used PS5 Pro price to $1,400, after an internal memo leaked on Reddit. The memo reportedly calls the markup "intentional" and sets a range of $1,400 to $1,500 depending on the version. GameStop can do this because used hardware is priced at the store's discretion, while new consoles are tied to Sony's list price.
So a used Pro now costs about $500 more than a new one, if you can find either.
Japan: 60 Hours of Play to Qualify
Sony Japan opened PS5 Pro applications on its Sony Store on September 28, 2026, with conditions aimed at scalpers, per Famitsu and Kotaku:
- You need a Japanese Sony account with at least 60 hours of combined PS4 or PS5 playtime between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026.
- Your Sony account must be linked to My Sony ID.
- One console per person, at the ¥137,980 list price.
- Applications closed on October 7. If demand beats supply, winners are drawn by lottery and told from around October 26.
- Deliveries are planned for the first half of November, just before GTA 6.
Kotaku notes the standard PS5 stayed in stock in Japan while the Pro ran short.
UK, Europe and India
The sellout is mainly a US story so far. We found no confirmed reports of UK retailers running dry the way US stores did. Stock still varies by retailer, so check before paying over list.
The Playfront memo suggests European supply is tight. For India, we could not find reliable reporting on PS5 Pro stock, so check official retailers directly rather than paying marketplace markups.
Base PS5 Gets AI Upscaling Too
On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for the base PS5 on the PlayStation Blog. It is a lighter version of the PSSR upscaler (AI that sharpens a lower-resolution image) that has been a PS5 Pro exclusive. Sony calls PSSR on the Pro the "gold standard," but says QSSR improves image detail and stability on the base console.
Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei got QSSR patches the same day, and Sony plans to offer it to all developers. Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 will use it.
Reports in 2026 also describe a quiet revision of the PS5 Slim with a grooved liquid metal cooling interface like the Pro's. Sony has not announced it, so treat it as a teardown finding, not an official change.
Should You Pay Scalper Prices for GTA 6?
For most people, no. Here is why:
- The Pro will not make GTA 6 run at 60fps. Rockstar says the game runs at 30fps on consoles for now, and Digital Foundry calls 60fps extremely unlikely on this hardware because the game is CPU bound. The Pro's CPU is only slightly faster. Read our breakdown of GTA 6 at 30fps on PS5 Pro for the details.
- The money buys a lot. The $500 GameStop markup alone covers GTA 6 and several more games. The base PS5 is $649.99, or $599.99 for the Digital Edition, and it has not been part of the sellout reports.
- Restocks are coming, just slowly. Retailers usually get waves of stock before the holidays, but the reported Sony memo points to tight supply into 2027. Waiting a few weeks after launch costs you little.
A Pro still makes sense if you already own a high-end TV, play a lot of PS5 Pro enhanced games, and can buy at $899.99. Track PlayStation Direct and the big retailers, and avoid paying more than list. Our PS6 release date guide covers what Sony has said about the next generation.

Confirmed: PS5 Pro list prices of $899.99, £789.99, €899.99 and ¥137,980. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Sony Japan's 60-hour Pro lottery. QSSR upscaling on the base PS5.
Not confirmed: Official Sony restock dates. The scope of the Sony supply memo, which was reported, not published. Whether GTA 6 will support QSSR or any PS5 Pro mode beyond 30fps. A revised base PS5 cooling design, which Sony has not announced.
