- Tips before you buy
Buying for a gamer is tricky. They already own the console, they have opinions about controllers, and the game you pick is probably the one they bought last week. The safe gifts are the ones that work with what they already play on.
This guide is sorted by type and budget, and every pick names the platform it works with. One warning first: 2026 has been a year of price hikes. The Switch 2, PlayStation Portal, Meta Quest 3S and Steam Deck all went up in price this year, so older gift guides are wrong. Every price here was checked in late September 2026.
- Prices are the regular US list price on the official store, not a sale price.
- Amazon Prime Big Deal Days runs October 6 to 7, and Black Friday is November 27. Many accessories here drop 20% to 30% in those sales.
- The Steam Autumn Sale runs early this year, October 1 to 8, and the Steam Winter Sale runs December 17 to January 4.
- Can't decide: a gift card for their platform. Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo all sell $10 to $100 cards.
- PC gamer: Xbox Wireless Controller ($64.99) or the new Logitech G305 X Superlight mouse ($79.99).
- PS5 owner: a second DualSense ($74.99) or 12 months of PlayStation Plus Essential ($79.99).
- Switch 2 owner: Switch 2 Pro Controller ($89.99) or Switch Online with Expansion Pack ($49.99 a year).
- Big gift: PlayStation Portal ($249.99) for PS5 owners, Meta Quest 3S ($349.99) for anyone.
Buying for someone who codes as well as games? See our gifts for developers list. For smaller budgets across all tech, our tech gifts under $50 guide has more ideas.

Before you buy
- Find out the platform first. A PlayStation gift card is useless to an Xbox player, and the Switch 2 Pro Controller does not work on the original Switch. If you can't ask, check which console sits under their TV.
- Check for Switch or Switch 2. Many families still have the original Switch. Switch 2 games and accessories are labelled clearly on the box.
- Subscriptions stack. If they already pay for Game Pass or PS Plus, a gift card still adds months to their plan. They redeem it on their own account.
- Buy accessories in a sale. Controllers and headsets are discounted often. Consoles rarely are, and in 2026 they have mostly gone up.
Stocking stuffers under $30
Gift cards feel lazy, but most gamers would rather have one than a game they already own. Digital codes arrive by email in minutes, so they also save a late gift.
Steam gift card
- PC (Steam)

Image: Valve
Who it suits: anyone with a PC or a Steam Deck.
Why: Steam's digital cards go straight into the person's Steam Wallet. You send it to a Steam friend, and it arrives the moment you pay. It is perfect timing for the Steam Autumn Sale (October 1 to 8) or the Winter Sale (December 17 to January 4), when the money goes much further.
What to skip: buying a specific Steam game as a surprise. There is a good chance they already own it or have it on their wishlist at a sale price.
- Runs on
- Any Steam account, PC or Steam Deck
- Skip if
- They only play on a console
- Price
- $5 to $100 digital, $20 to $100 physical
PlayStation Store gift card
- PS5

Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Who it suits: PS5 and PS4 players.
Why: the balance pays for games, add-ons and PlayStation Plus. Cards are region locked, so a US card only works on a US account.
What to skip: cards from third-party resellers at a "discount". Buy from PlayStation, Amazon or a big store so the code is not already used.
- Runs on
- US PlayStation account
- Skip if
- They play on Xbox or PC
- Price
- $10, $20, $50 or $100
Nintendo eShop card
- Nintendo Switch

Image: Nintendo
Who it suits: kids and families with a Switch or Switch 2.
Why: parents like it because the child spends only the card's value, with no credit card on the account. Two cards cover most full-price Switch 2 games.
What to skip: in-game currency cards for a single game. An eShop card works for any game, including the one they want next month.
- Runs on
- US Nintendo Account, Switch or Switch 2
- Skip if
- Nobody in the house plays Nintendo
- Price
- $10, $20, $35 or $50
Xbox gift card (digital code)
- Xbox Series X|S

Image: Microsoft
Who it suits: Xbox players and PC players who use Game Pass.
Why: the balance can pay for Game Pass months, games on the Xbox store and PC games in the Xbox app. The $15, $25 and $50 amounts are the easiest to find in stores.
What to skip: nothing major. Just check they use an Xbox or Game Pass on PC before you buy.
- Runs on
- Microsoft account, Xbox or Windows PC
- Skip if
- They play on PlayStation or Switch
- Price
- $10 to $100
PowerA Twin Charging Station for DualSense
- PS5

Image: PowerA
Who it suits: PS5 owners who keep finding a dead controller.
Why: two controllers click into the stand and charge together, and the stand looks tidy next to the console. It is one of those gifts nobody buys for themselves.
What to skip: it was backordered on PowerA's own store when we checked, with restock expected on October 29. Amazon, Target and Best Buy had it in stock, often for less.
- Runs on
- PS5 DualSense controllers
- Skip if
- They play wired or already have a dock
- Price
- $27.99
Controllers
A second controller is always useful: for a friend on the couch, for PC games, or as a backup when the first one drifts.
Xbox Wireless Controller
- Xbox Series X|S
- PC (Steam)

Image: Microsoft
Who it suits: PC gamers and Xbox players.
Why: almost every PC game shows Xbox buttons by default, so this controller just works. It connects over Bluetooth to a PC, phone or tablet, and it runs on AA batteries, so it never dies mid-game for long. Microsoft had it on sale for $49.49 when we checked.
What to skip: the $79.99 special editions, unless you like the colors. Inside, they are the same controller.
- Runs on
- Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, Android, iPhone
- Skip if
- They only play on PS5
- Price
- $64.99
Sony DualSense Wireless Controller
- PS5
- PC (Steam)

Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Who it suits: PS5 owners who want a second controller for co-op. Our best co-op games for PS5 and Xbox list gives them something to play with it.
Why: the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are a big part of how PS5 games feel, and no third-party controller copies them fully. It also works well on PC with Steam.
What to skip: PlayStation Direct showed some standard colors as low stock, so check Amazon or Target too. Limited editions cost $84.99.
- Runs on
- PS5, Windows PC, Mac, Android, iPhone
- Skip if
- They play on Xbox
- Price
- $74.99
8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller
- Nintendo Switch
- PC (Steam)

Image: 8BitDo
Who it suits: Switch owners who also play on PC, and anyone worried about stick drift.
Why: its TMR thumbsticks use magnets instead of parts that wear out, so drift is far less likely. It comes with a charging dock and has back buttons, for $20 less than Nintendo's Pro Controller.
What to skip: it was sold out on 8BitDo's own store when we checked, but Amazon had it, often for $48 to $60. It has no NFC for amiibo figures.
- Runs on
- Switch 2, Switch, Windows PC
- Skip if
- They need amiibo (NFC) or HD Rumble
- Price
- $69.99
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
- Nintendo Switch

Image: Nintendo
Who it suits: Switch 2 owners who play docked on a TV.
Why: it is far more comfortable than the Joy-Con for long sessions. It adds two back buttons, a C button for GameChat and a headset jack.
What to skip: it does not work on the original Switch. Special editions cost $99.99.
- Runs on
- Switch 2 only
- Skip if
- They still have the original Switch
- Price
- $89.99
Headsets
A good headset makes online games and late-night play better for everyone in the house. Check the platform first: some wireless headsets need a different model for Xbox.
HyperX Cloud III (wired)
- PS5
- Xbox Series X|S
- Nintendo Switch
- PC (Steam)

Image: HyperX
Who it suits: anyone, on any console. If you are not sure what they play, this is the safe headset.
Why: the Cloud line is famous for comfort, and a wired headset works with every controller that has a headphone jack. HyperX sold it for $69.99 when we checked.
What to skip: it is wired. For wireless, the Cloud III S Wireless costs $179.99.
- Runs on
- PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch, Mac, phones
- Skip if
- They want wireless
- Price
- $99.99 (often $69.99)
PlayStation PULSE Elite
- PS5

Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Who it suits: PS5 owners, especially those with a PlayStation Portal.
Why: it pairs straight to the PS5 and uses PlayStation's own low-latency wireless link. With a Portal, it gives the best audio you can get on that handheld.
What to skip: Sony announced a new PlayStation Pulse headset on September 15, due in some markets this holiday with no US price yet. If you are not in a hurry, wait to see its price.
- Runs on
- PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC, phones
- Skip if
- They play on several consoles
- Price
- $149.99
SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 Wireless Gen 2
- PS5
- Nintendo Switch
- PC (Steam)

Image: SteelSeries
Who it suits: people who play on a PC and a console, and take calls on their phone.
Why: it connects to the game over 2.4GHz and to a phone over Bluetooth at the same time, and the battery lasts more than 50 hours. Stores listed it between $179.99 and $199.99 when we checked.
What to skip: the standard model does not work wirelessly on Xbox. Buy the Nova 7X version for an Xbox player.
- Runs on
- PC, PS5, Switch 2, Switch, phones
- Skip if
- They play on Xbox (buy the Nova 7X)
- Price
- about $199.99
For PC gamers and streamers
Logitech G305 X Superlight
- PC (Steam)

Image: Logitech G
Who it suits: PC gamers who play shooters or any fast game.
Why: it is new for 2026 and weighs just 59g, with the same kind of sensor as Logitech's top mice, for less than half the price of the Pro X Superlight 2 (about $179.99).
What to skip: it is small and light. Someone with big hands who likes a heavy mouse will prefer a larger shape.
- Runs on
- Windows PC, Mac
- Skip if
- They like large, heavy mice
- Price
- $79.99
HyperX QuadCast 2 USB microphone
- PS5
- PC (Steam)

Image: HyperX
Who it suits: anyone who streams, records videos or talks to friends on Discord every night.
Why: it plugs in over USB and works right away. A tap on the top mutes it, which is handy mid-game.
What to skip: serious podcasters, who usually want a dynamic mic like the Shure MV7+.
- Runs on
- PC, Mac, PS5, Switch, Steam Deck
- Skip if
- They record podcasts with an audio interface
- Price
- $149.99
Elgato Game Capture 4K S
- PS5
- Xbox Series X|S
- Nintendo Switch

Image: Elgato
Who it suits: console players who want to stream or record their games.
Why: it records up to 4K at 60 frames per second with HDR, and it passes the picture through to the TV with no lag. It even works with an iPad.
What to skip: the older Elgato HD60 X, which is discontinued. PC gamers who stream their PC games do not need a capture card at all.
- Runs on
- PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, plus a PC, Mac or iPad
- Skip if
- They only stream PC games
- Price
- $159.99
Subscriptions
A subscription is a gift they use every week. Gift the 12-month option where you can: it is the best value, and it does not expire before they notice.
Xbox Game Pass
- Xbox Series X|S
- PC (Steam)

Image: Microsoft
Who it suits: Xbox players and PC players who try lots of games. Our Game Pass recently added list shows what is new each month.
Why: hundreds of games for one monthly price. Microsoft cut Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 and PC Game Pass to $13.99 in April 2026, so it is better value than it was a year ago. The easiest way to gift it is an Xbox gift card.
What to skip: new Call of Duty games no longer join Game Pass on launch day. They arrive about a year later.
- Runs on
- Xbox or Windows PC
- Skip if
- They mostly play new Call of Duty games on day one
- Price
- Essential $9.99, Premium $14.99, PC $13.99, Ultimate $22.99 per month
PlayStation Plus (12 months)
- PS5

Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Who it suits: PS5 owners who play online. Essential is needed for most online multiplayer. Our PS Plus monthly games page tracks the free games each month.
Why: monthly prices went up in May 2026, but the 12-month prices did not change. That makes the yearly plan the one to gift.
What to skip: Premium, unless they want the classic game library and cloud streaming. Extra is the sweet spot for most people.
- Runs on
- PS5 or PS4
- Skip if
- They only play single-player games they buy
- Price
- Essential $79.99, Extra $134.99, Premium $159.99 per year
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
- Nintendo Switch

Image: Nintendo
Who it suits: Switch families who play Mario Kart or Smash online.
Why: online play needs Switch Online. The Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and GameCube classics (GameCube on Switch 2). The family plan covers up to eight accounts. Our Switch games release calendar shows what is coming next.
What to skip: the basic plan is enough if they only want online play.
- Runs on
- Switch or Switch 2
- Skip if
- They never play online or retro games
- Price
- $49.99 per year (basic plan $19.99)
Big gifts over $150
DualSense Edge
- PS5

Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Who it suits: competitive PS5 players.
Why: back buttons, adjustable triggers and thumbstick modules you can replace when they wear out, instead of replacing the whole controller.
What to skip: the battery life is shorter than the normal DualSense. Casual players will not notice the extra features.
- Runs on
- PS5, Windows PC
- Skip if
- They play casually
- Price
- $199.99
PlayStation Portal
- PS5

Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Who it suits: PS5 owners who share the TV with the rest of the family.
Why: it streams games from their PS5 to a handheld screen with a full DualSense on each side, so they can play in bed while someone else watches TV. With PS Plus Premium it can also stream some games from the cloud.
What to skip: it is not a standalone console. On weak Wi-Fi, streaming stutters. It went up from $199.99 in April 2026.
- Runs on
- Needs a PS5 and good home Wi-Fi
- Skip if
- They do not own a PS5
- Price
- $249.99
Meta Quest 3S

Image: Meta
Who it suits: anyone curious about VR, including people who do not own a console.
Why: it works on its own, with no PC or console. Beat Saber and fitness games are great for families.
What to skip: it needs a Meta account. The price went up by $50 in April 2026.
- Runs on
- Standalone, phone app for setup
- Skip if
- They get motion sick easily
- Price
- $349.99 (128GB), $449.99 (256GB)
Nintendo Switch 2
- Nintendo Switch

Image: Nintendo
Who it suits: families, and anyone who wants one console for the TV and the train.
Why: it plays in handheld mode and on the TV, and it runs most original Switch games too. Nintendo's own games are still the best family games around.
What to skip: it went up from $449.99 on September 1, 2026. Budget for a game and a microSD Express card (about $60 for 256GB), because the built-in storage fills fast.
- Runs on
- TV or handheld
- Skip if
- They already have one
- Price
- $499.99
Steam Deck OLED
- PC (Steam)

Image: Valve
Who it suits: PC gamers who want to play their Steam library on the couch or on trips.
Why: the OLED screen is excellent, and it plays thousands of Steam games they already own. Nothing else runs a whole PC library this well in your hands.
What to skip: Valve raised prices by $240 to $300 in May 2026, and the cheaper LCD model is gone. At this price, it only makes sense for someone with a big Steam library.
- Runs on
- Handheld PC, Steam account
- Skip if
- You want value: a Switch 2 is cheaper
- Price
- $789 (512GB), $949 (1TB)
Gifts we skipped (and why)
- Steam Controller (2026). It costs $99, but it sold out in minutes and new orders ship in December or 2027. It will not arrive by Christmas.
- Steam Machine and Steam Frame. Valve's new console-style PC ($1,049 and up) and VR headset ($1,059 and up) are new, expensive and hard to buy.
- Xbox Series X. After the August 2026 price rise it costs $749.99 or more. For most people, Game Pass on a PC they already own is a better gift.
- A specific game as a surprise. Unless they told you, there is a good chance they own it already. A gift card is safer.
Tips before you buy
- Time it with the sales. Prime Big Deal Days (October 6 to 7) and Black Friday (November 27) are the best times for controllers and headsets. Our Black Friday deals guide tracks them.
- Track Amazon prices. A price tracker shows whether a "deal" is really the lowest price. See our Amazon price tracker guide.
- Buy digital codes late, hardware early. Gift cards arrive by email in minutes. Consoles and popular accessories can sell out in December.
- Keep the receipt. Most US stores extend holiday returns into January, which helps if they already own it.
