No, GTA 6 does not need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass, and the single-player game is listed for offline play. The PlayStation Store tags Grand Theft Auto VI "Offline play enabled" and "1 player", and Rockstar calls it "a single-player experience". You do need internet at least once to get the game onto your console, because every copy (even the boxed one) is a download.
A Rockstar Games account is a different question. The store listings say some features "may require" one, but neither Rockstar nor the stores say you need one to play the story. Here is what each store and Rockstar actually say, as of November 4, 2026.
Last checked November 4, 2026 against Rockstar's press release and Newswire, the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store listings.
GTA 6 requirements at a glance
| Requirement | Needed? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Internet to download | Yes | Every version is a download, up to 212 GB per Rockstar. The boxed edition holds a download code, not a disc. |
| Internet to play the story | No (per store listing) | PS Store tags GTA 6 "Offline play enabled". On PS5 this works on your main console. |
| Internet for updates | Yes, to install them | Rockstar has not published day-one patch notes as of November 4. |
| PS Plus (PS5) | No | The listing shows no "online play" tag. PS Plus is for online multiplayer. |
| Xbox Game Pass Essential (formerly Core) | No | The Xbox listing names "Single player" and no online multiplayer. |
| Rockstar Games account | Not for the story, as far as we can tell | Store legal text says "certain game features" may need one. Rockstar has not said story mode does. |
| PlayStation or Xbox account | Yes | You need one to buy, download and redeem the game. Sony says online features need a PlayStation account. |
| GTA+ | No | Optional Rockstar membership. Digital pre-orders get one month free. |
Can you play GTA 6 offline?
Yes, based on what the stores list. The US PlayStation Store page for Grand Theft Auto VI shows these feature tags: "Offline play enabled", "1 player", "Remote Play supported" and "PS5 Pro Enhanced". The listing also says you can play the game "on the main PS5 console associated with your account (through the 'Console Sharing and Offline Play' setting)".
In plain terms: if your PS5 is set as your main console, a digital copy keeps working when the internet drops. On a second PS5, you need to sign in with your account, which needs a connection.
The Xbox Store page lists the game's capabilities as "Single player", "Xbox achievements", "Xbox presence", "Xbox cloud saves" and "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S". It does not use the words "offline play". On Xbox, digital games play offline on the console you set as your home Xbox. Treat that as Xbox's general rule rather than a GTA-specific promise.
Rockstar's own pre-order press release from June 24, 2026 says the game "features a single-player experience". Nothing Rockstar has published says the story needs a constant connection.
Do you need internet the first time you play?
You need it to get the game. Pre-load starts on Tuesday, November 10, per Rockstar's November 3 Newswire post. On PS5 it opens at midnight local time. On Xbox Series X|S it opens worldwide at 12 a.m. GMT, which is 7 p.m. ET on November 9. Rockstar says the download is up to 212 GB, depending on your console.
The game itself unlocks on November 19, 2026. Pre-loading only gets the files onto your drive, and nobody plays early.
Will the game demand a connection the first time you start it? Rockstar has not said. It has not published day-one patch notes as of November 4. If a launch patch arrives, your console will want to download it before or after you start playing. The safe plan is to start the game online on November 19 once, then go offline if you need to.
Our pre-load and refunds guide covers storage space and the refund catch on PlayStation in more detail.
Does the physical copy need a download?
Yes. The Rockstar Store page for the boxed edition says: "Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box". It also says "A disc will not be included in the box."
So a boxed copy still needs:
- A PlayStation or Xbox account to redeem the code
- An internet connection to download the full game
- Enough free space on your internal SSD or an approved expansion drive
Rockstar says code-in-box copies reach retailers from November 12, two days after the digital pre-load starts. A boxed copy does not let you play without internet on day one, because the download comes first.
Do you need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass Essential?
No. PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass Essential (the tier Microsoft used to call Game Pass Core) are for online multiplayer. GTA 6 has none at launch.
- PS5: Sony's own PS Plus page says you need a membership "to play online" in most games. The GTA 6 listing has no "Online play" tag, only "Offline play enabled" and "1 player".
- Xbox: the Xbox Store lists Game Pass Essential with "Online console multiplayer" as a benefit. GTA 6's Xbox capabilities list "Single player" and no online multiplayer.
Rockstar's press release describes the game as a single-player experience. It mentions GTA Online only as part of GTA+, a Rockstar membership. Take-Two has also said GTA 6 is single-player at launch. Our GTA 6 Online explainer covers what is known about multiplayer arriving later.
If a GTA 6 online mode launches later, it will most likely need PS Plus or a paid Game Pass tier, like online play in other console games. That is our expectation, not something Rockstar has announced.
Do you need a Rockstar Games account?
Not for the story, as far as anyone can tell right now. But Rockstar has not given a clear yes or no for GTA 6.
The same publisher text appears on both the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings: "Certain game features, content, services, or functions may require internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration (minimum age varies), single-use serial code, additional fees, or unlocking with gameplay." The key words are "certain" and "may". That is the standard legal note Rockstar puts on its games. It does not say the story requires an account.
Here is how Rockstar handled GTA 5: its support pages say console players do not need a Rockstar Games account for Story Mode, but do need one for some online features. That is the closest official precedent, but it is not a GTA 6 rule.
When you are likely to see an account prompt:
- Redeeming GTA+: the free month for digital pre-orders is a Rockstar membership, so linking a Rockstar account is the normal route.
- Online extras: anything Rockstar runs on its own servers, like GTA Online did for GTA 5.
- Rockstar Store orders: buying the boxed edition from the Rockstar Store uses a Rockstar account. Store orders and refunds go through Xsolla, per Rockstar Support.
If the game asks you to sign in at first launch, you should be able to skip it for the story unless Rockstar says otherwise. We will update this page once someone has played the launch version.
What Rockstar Support says
As of November 4, 2026, Rockstar Support has a GTA 6 pre-order and purchase FAQ covering pre-load timing, physical copies and cancellations. We could not find a GTA 6 support article on offline play or account requirements. Rockstar's general advice for its older games is that story modes do not usually need internet, but some games or modes need it for activation.
If you run into a sign-in or activation error at launch, contact Rockstar Support for game problems. For download or code problems, contact PlayStation or Xbox support, or the retailer you bought from.
