- Truecaller's privacy problem, and how to unlist your number
Truecaller is the default caller ID app for millions of Indians. The basic app is free, but it shows ads, and the extras sit behind a subscription. On the Indian App Store, Truecaller Premium is ₹99 a month or ₹899 a year, and a Family plan is ₹249 a month or ₹1,489 a year.
Price is not the main reason people leave. Privacy is. Truecaller builds its caller ID database partly from the address books of its users. If a friend installs it and allows contact access, your name and number can end up in that database, even if you never used the app. The ads, the constant upsell and a crowded interface push others away too.
The good news: you now have real choices, and some of them are already on your phone. Your Android dialer, your Samsung phone, your iPhone and even your mobile network can now flag spam, and India's new CNAP service shows a caller's registered name without any app. This list covers 10 options. For each one we note the price, whether it shows real caller names, whether it uploads your contacts, and whether it needs an account. Every detail comes from official pages, app store listings or operator announcements. We have not run our own tests.
Last checked: September 26, 2026. Prices are Indian App Store prices unless noted. In-app prices can differ by country, platform and account.
- Best free option on Android: Google Phone flags spam and shows business names. Google says it does not read your contact list for this.
- Best on Samsung: Smart Call is built into Galaxy phones and powered by Hiya. Just switch it on.
- Best on iPhone: Silence Unknown Callers plus Live Voicemail stop most spam calls with no app at all.
- Best in India, no app: CNAP shows the caller's KYC-registered name on 4G and 5G calls, and Airtel and Jio label suspected spam for free.
- Best standalone app: Hiya has free caller ID and spam blocking, and says your contacts never leave your phone.
- Most private: Should I Answer uses anonymous ratings and an offline database, and says it never sends your contacts anywhere.
- Report spam officially: the free TRAI DND app sets your Do Not Disturb preference and files complaints with your operator.

Built into your phone: no extra app
Google Phone app
- Android
Google Phone is the default dialer on Pixel phones and many other Android handsets, and it is on Google Play for most phones on Android 9 and later. Its caller ID and spam feature warns you with "Suspected spam caller" and shows the names of businesses that call you.

Turn on Filter spam calls in Settings, then Caller ID and spam, and suspected spam will not ring at all. The calls still show in your call history. Newer versions also warn you when a caller hides their identity or impersonates a contact.
On privacy, Google's help page says it only receives the numbers of people outside your contacts who call you or whom you call. It says Google does not get numbers from your contact list. Call Screen, which answers unknown callers for you, is limited to some devices and to the US and Canada.
What you lose vs Truecaller: names for individual callers. Google mostly identifies businesses.

Samsung Smart Call
If you use a Samsung Galaxy phone, you already have a spam filter. Smart Call is built into Samsung's Phone app and uses Hiya's spam database. Samsung's India page confirms it is offered here, though features can vary by country and device.
Incoming calls get sorted into caller ID, not suspected as spam, suspected spam and potential fraud. You can block or report a number in one tap. Find it in the Phone app under Settings, then Caller ID and spam protection. Samsung notes the lookup uses mobile data.
What you lose vs Truecaller: crowdsourced names for private numbers. Smart Call is strongest on businesses and spam.

iPhone Silence Unknown Callers and Live Voicemail
Silence Unknown Callers (Settings, then Apps, then Phone on recent iOS) sends every number that is not in your contacts, recent calls or Siri suggestions straight to voicemail. The call still appears in your recents.
Live Voicemail shows a live transcript as the caller leaves a message, so you can pick up if it matters. Apple limits Live Voicemail to certain regions and languages, so check that it appears in your Phone settings.
What you lose vs Truecaller: any caller name for unknown numbers, and the risk of missing a genuine first-time call.

CNAP (Calling Name Presentation)
CNAP is India's official answer to Truecaller. Your operator shows the caller's name on the incoming call screen, taken from the KYC records used when the SIM was bought. No app, no contact upload and no ads.
TRAI agreed with the Department of Telecommunications in October 2025 that CNAP should be on by default, with an option to opt out. Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL began a phased rollout in late 2025, circle by circle. DoT set March 31, 2026 as the target for all circles. As of this update we could not confirm that coverage is complete in every circle, so whether you see names today depends on your operator, your circle and your phone. It starts with 4G and 5G. Older 2G and 3G networks come later.
What you lose vs Truecaller: spam labels, and friendly names. CNAP shows the legal name on the SIM, which may not be the name you know.

Airtel AI spam alerts
Airtel launched network-level spam detection in September 2024. It is free and switched on for every Airtel customer, with no app to install. Suspected spam calls and SMS are labelled as they arrive.
In April 2025 Airtel added alerts for spam from international networks and alerts in 10 Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali. Airtel says the language alerts work only on Android phones.
What you lose vs Truecaller: caller names and automatic blocking. Airtel labels the call, and you decide.

Jio spam and fraud alerts
Jio started showing spam and fraud labels on incoming calls around September 2025, after TRAI asked operators to flag spam at the network level. Like Airtel's system, it works without an app.
Early reports say it is still learning. Some users saw genuine numbers, such as delivery partners and bank agents, flagged as spam. Jio has not published how it decides what counts as spam.
What you lose vs Truecaller: caller names, blocking, and an easy way to correct a wrong label.

TRAI DND
- Android
- iPhone and iPad
TRAI DND is the regulator's own app. You use it to turn on full or partial Do Not Disturb, choose which promotional categories you still want, and report spam calls and SMS straight from your call log or inbox. Reports must be filed within seven days, and each complaint goes to your operator.

TRAI says this app accounts for 89% of spam complaints received by operators, and action starts when a number collects five or more complaints in 10 days.
What you lose vs Truecaller: caller ID. TRAI DND does not show who is calling. It is a reporting and prevention tool.

Standalone caller ID apps
Hiya
- Android
- iPhone and iPad
Hiya is the company behind Samsung's Smart Call, and its own app brings the same spam database to any Android phone or iPhone. The free version includes caller ID, spam and scam blocking, and number lookup.

Premium adds a call screener and AI voice detection, but the App Store listing says both work only in the US and Canada. That makes the free tier the sensible choice in India. On privacy, Hiya says contacts you share with it do not leave your phone.
What you lose vs Truecaller: Truecaller's huge crowdsourced name database for personal numbers in India.

Should I Answer
- Android
- iPhone and iPad
Should I Answer takes the opposite approach to Truecaller. Users rate unknown numbers anonymously as safe or spam, and after a moderator check those ratings go into a database stored on your phone. Lookups work offline.

You can set it to warn you or to block spam outright, including hidden, foreign and premium-rate numbers. The developer says the app cannot see your own number and never sends your contacts anywhere. Apple's privacy label says the developer collects no data. On iPhone, caller info, blocking and daily database updates need a subscription (₹149 a month in India).
What you lose vs Truecaller: caller names. You see a rating, not a person.

Showcaller
- Android
Showcaller is the closest match to Truecaller's look and feel on Android. It shows caller name and region when available, flags spam, blocks numbers, and includes reverse number lookup and a replacement dialer. Its listing talks directly about Indian scam types, like fake bank calls, loan scams and OTP scams.

The Play listing says it contains ads and in-app purchases. It does not clearly say how it builds its name database, so check its permissions before you allow contact access.
What you lose vs Truecaller: a well-known, large database. Name coverage may be thinner.

Truecaller's privacy problem, and how to unlist your number
Truecaller's App Store listing says, "Your phonebook is never made searchable or publicly available." But the app still asks for your contacts, and the listing's privacy section shows contacts, location, identifiers and search history can be collected, some of it for third-party advertising.
The bigger issue is that you do not have to use Truecaller to be in it. Your name and number can come from someone else's address book. To remove yourself:
- If you have a Truecaller account, open the app, go to Settings, then Privacy Center, and deactivate your account first.
- Go to truecaller.com/unlisting, enter your number with the country code, pick a reason and submit. You do not need an account for this page.
- Wait about a day for removal. Your number can reappear if someone uploads it again, so check back now and then.
Worried about other apps that collect a lot about you? See our guide to Life360 alternatives for the same privacy question on location sharing.
Truecaller Premium still makes sense for some people:
- People who get many calls from unknown personal numbers, such as small business owners and freelancers, where names for individuals matter more than spam labels.
- Families protecting older parents who want one plan, shared blocking and scam warnings across several phones.
- Heavy users of Truecaller Assistant, the AI call screener that asks unknown callers why they are calling.
For everyone else, the built-in spam filter on your phone, CNAP and your operator's free spam labels cover most of what Truecaller does, without uploading your contacts.
