Free Tools and Perks for Open Source Maintainers

Anthropic gives six months of Claude Max 20x, its top individual plan, to open source maintainers and core contributors. That covers Claude Code as well as the Claude apps. The programme launched in February 2026 and later widened its criteria to five tracks. You qualify if any one applies:

• You maintain a package with 500+ dependent repos, 100+ dependent packages, or 200,000+ monthly downloads.
• You are a core contributor to a recognised foundation project (CPython, Rust, Node.js, Apache, CNCF, Kubernetes, the Linux kernel, Django, Rails and similar).
• You had 100+ merged pull requests in repos you do not own in the past year.
• Your repos attracted 20+ unique external contributors with merged PRs in the last year.
• You maintain critical infrastructure with an OpenSSF criticality score of 0.4 or higher.

Anthropic also says to apply anyway if you maintain something "the ecosystem quietly depends on". Review is rolling. Some older guides quote a June 30, 2026 deadline; the official page no longer shows one.

OpenAI's answer, launched in March 2026. Approved maintainers get six months of ChatGPT Pro with Codex for coding, triage and review. Projects that need deeper coverage can get conditional access to Codex Security, and projects that wire Codex into PR review or release automation can get API credits from a $1 million Codex Open Source Fund.

Eligibility: core maintainers and leaders of widely used public projects. OpenAI looks for meaningful usage, broad adoption, or clear importance to the ecosystem, and invites you to explain your case if you do not fit. You can also nominate another maintainer. Review is rolling with no published deadline.

There is no form. If you maintain a popular open source repository, GitHub offers you Copilot Pro for free. Open your profile settings, go to Copilot, and if you qualify you will see a banner saying so. Click "Get access to GitHub Copilot" and set your policies.

GitHub does not publish what counts as "popular" and re-checks eligibility every month, so a project that grows can qualify later. Copilot Pro normally costs $10 a month and includes a monthly allowance of GitHub AI Credits for premium models. One catch: once granted, you cannot cancel the free plan yourself.

JetBrains gives established open source projects a free All Products Pack: IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, Rider, CLion and the rest, for one year, renewable. Requirements: an OSI-approved licence, a public repo, at least three months of active development, and no commercial model. Each application is reviewed by hand.

AI features are not part of the open source licence. JetBrains AI needs its own subscription. If you do not qualify, JetBrains IDEs are also free for any non-commercial use with no application at all, which covers most hobby open source work.

Cloudflare's open source credits programme. Depending on your needs, it can upgrade you to the Pro, Business or Enterprise plan, raise your Workers and Pages request limits, add R2 storage for builds and artifacts, and add Zero Trust access including Remote Browser Isolation. Credits recur every year.

Eligibility: an open source project with a recognised OSS licence that operates solely on a non-profit basis. Acceptance and benefits are at Cloudflare's discretion, and you need a Cloudflare account with a payment method on file.

10,000 credits a month, free production deploys, unlimited team members, and sites that stay up even if credits run out. You need four things: an OSI-approved licence (or Creative Commons with attribution or public domain), a Code of Conduct in the repo or docs, a visible "powered by Netlify" link or badge on your site, and no commercial model. Apply with the form linked from the policy page.

Fastly has given free services to open source projects since 2014 and currently serves projects like Python, Rust and Ruby. You apply through a Google Form explaining how your project is open, community-centred and friendly to contributors, and working toward secure processes. Fastly then contacts you to discuss your technical needs. Nonprofits that support open source also qualify.

Removes Docker Hub pull rate limits for your public images (for you and for everyone pulling them), adds a verified Sponsored OSS badge, and gives core contributors a free one-year Docker Team subscription with Docker Desktop, 15 concurrent autobuilds and unlimited vulnerability scans.

Eligibility: images public on Docker Hub, source code public and open source under the OSI definition, active development (image or dependency updates within the past six months), and no path to commercialisation. Status lasts one year and can be renewed.

The simplest perk on the list: GitHub Actions is free for public repositories on standard GitHub-hosted runners, with no minute cap. Nothing to apply for. The exception is larger runners, which are always billed, even for public repos.

Organisations on CircleCI's Free plan get up to 400,000 credits a month for Linux, Arm and Docker builds on public repos, plus 30,000 credits for macOS and Windows. It includes SSH debugging, Docker layer caching, test insights and self-hosted runners. No application: keep the repo public and sign up.

Free access to Live, Automate and Percy (visual testing) on 3,500+ real browsers and devices, with 5 users and 5 parallel sessions, for as long as the project lives. You sign up with your project URL. BrowserStack does not publish detailed eligibility rules beyond being an active open source project.

The standard hosted binary cache for Nix projects. Open source projects get a free 5 GB cache and 20 Cachix Deploy agents, so contributors and CI can pull prebuilt packages instead of rebuilding them.

Free documentation hosting for open source, with automatic builds, versioning, search, pull request previews and a CDN. The Community plan is ad supported and covers public repos and public docs only. Private repos, private docs and team management are on the paid Business plan.

The search box you see on thousands of docs sites. Algolia crawls and indexes your docs on a schedule and hosts the search for free. It is for public technical documentation and technical blogs. Apply from the Algolia dashboard; automated checks run first, and manual review takes one to two business days. You must verify domain ownership within seven days of approval.

Non-commercial open source projects get Mintlify Pro free forever, including custom domains, analytics, API playgrounds and AI features. You must have a recognised OSS licence, not be venture backed or revenue funded, and not be owned or mainly maintained by a for-profit company.

Free use of Crowdin's translation platform. Create a Crowdin project first, then apply. Requirements: an OSI-approved licence, public source code, no commercial model, active leadership and community, at least three months of history, and regular releases. You agree to join Crowdin's beta group and contribute to its Global Translation Memory.

Transifex started as an open source project in 2007 and still localises eligible projects for free. You need public source code, an OSI-approved licence, and no funding, revenue or commercialisation model. Sign up and request the open source plan.

Snyk gives community open source projects its full platform with an Enterprise licence and no usage limits: dependency scanning, code scanning, container and IaC checks, and automated fix PRs, plus API access and Discord support. The project must not be backed by a corporate entity, you add a Snyk link to your README and website, and you allow Snyk to show your logo.

Public, OSI-licensed repositories get SonarQube Cloud with the same features as the paid plan, for 30+ languages, with no seat or lines-of-code limits on public code. Sonar also offers free Gitar AI Code Review for open source through a separate form linked from the pricing page.

Codecov's free Developer plan gives unlimited uploads and unlimited users on public repos, with PR comments, status checks, patch coverage, bundle analysis and failed test reporting. Private repos on the same plan are capped at 250 uploads a month.

A free 1Password Teams account for your project, with SSH key management, Git commit signing, CLI and secrets management. You must be a core contributor, and the project must be at least 30 days old, active, permissively licensed and non-commercial (sponsorships are fine). Organisers of open source meetups and conferences also qualify. Create a team account, add a second owner, then open an application issue in the repo. Membership continues as long as you stay eligible.

GitLab Ultimate (SaaS or self-managed) with 50,000 compute minutes and unlimited seats. Every project in your namespace must use an OSI-approved licence, your group and code must be public, and you cannot have a commercial model. You apply through the Customers Portal and must reapply every year or the account downgrades. Technical support is not included.

Tailscale is free for a GitHub organisation that uses it for an open source project with an OSI licence, as long as you sign in with GitHub. It is handy for sharing a build box or test server with other maintainers. You cannot pick this plan on the billing page: contact Tailscale support to get it.

Probably the most generous tool programme here. Sentry's open source sponsorship includes 5 million errors, 1 billion spans, 5,000 GB of logs, 100,000 replays, 500 cron monitors, 25 uptime monitors, profiling hours, and Seer (Sentry's AI debugger) for five active contributors, with Business features and no term limit. Apply with the form; your project should use a permissive licence such as Apache or MIT.

Anyone who contributes to open source in 130+ supported countries can get a Sponsors profile, and GitHub counts triage, docs, design and mentoring as contributions, not just code. Sponsorships from personal accounts carry no fees, so 100% reaches you. Sponsorships from organisations carry up to 6% (3% card processing and 3% GitHub fee). The old Matching Fund closed in 2020.

A US 501(c)(6) nonprofit that acts as the legal and financial home for 2,500+ open source projects on Open Collective. It handles accounting, taxes, invoices, contracts and payouts, so companies can pay your project with a proper invoice. The fee is 10% of funds raised. Collectives themselves are free to run on the Open Collective platform.

Companies connect their codebases, thanks.dev scores their dependency tree, and their budget is split across the projects they depend on. Sentry, Codecov and Canonical are among the largest donors. As a maintainer you sign in with GitHub or GitLab, choose a payout method, and withdraw, transfer or re-donate your balance.

Funded by the German government, it invests globally in open digital infrastructure. Three programmes matter to maintainers:

• Sovereign Tech Fund: investments from €50,000 in "open digital base technologies" that other software depends on. Apply at apply.sovereign.tech; expect about six months from application to contract. It does not fund user-facing apps, prototypes, or work already publicly funded.
• Sovereign Tech Resilience: security audits, a bug bounty platform, vulnerability management and help with technical debt.
• Sovereign Tech Fellowship: direct payments to maintainers of critical components.
