Gaming GPUs aren’t optimized for professional workloads like CAD, so this laptop can get the job done but isn’t as good as one with a dedicated GPU.

The only thing that keeps it from being an Editors’ Choice is a Core i7 processor that did worse in some of our tests than a Core i5.

You can get the Acer Swift 3 (2020) for a low price, but it’s not free. We found a fair amount of useless software on the Swift 3 when we first got it, but it was easy to get rid of with the app management tool in the Windows Control Panel. The webcam and built-in mic work, but they’re not very good. But they’re both fine for work-related teleconferencing through Zoom or something similar. Neither is good enough for professional Twitch streaming, YouTube broadcasting, or anything else like that.

Gateway 14

The Gateway 14 is the best choice if you want the best specs for the least amount of money…. This funky device with cow spots will make you stand out from the crowd. It comes in a few different colours. Some of the best specs you can find are in this product, along with a wide range of great ports and fast performance. You can even put in as much storage as you need because there is an empty drive slot.

There are some trade-offs to be aware of. One problem is that the microphones aren’t very good, and the touchpad is hard to use and loud. Considering how cheap the Gateway is, these are fair trade-offs, especially since they can both be easily fixed with external devices. In terms of specs, performance, and battery life, the Gateway 14 is the best laptop you can buy for the money. Also, it looks really cute.

Both work fine for simple things like email, web browsing, and playing videos, but don’t expect to be able to do anything very hard with them. We suggest getting a model with 8GB of memory because it will run more smoothly and slow down less when you’re doing more than one thing at once. Light use lasts for about seven hours, which isn’t great but isn’t terrible for such a small device. The ports aren’t great; there’s only one USB-C port, a proprietary charging port, and a headphone jack.

If all you need is a device to watch videos, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021) is a better choice. It has a beautiful OLED screen that supports full DCI P3 and a battery that lets you watch videos for almost eight hours. At 13 inches, it’s a bit bigger, but it’s still small and light. The sturdy aluminium build of the Galaxy Book makes it feel much more expensive than a cheap laptop. The 16-inch size also makes it seem more portable than a MacBook Pro of the same size, thanks to the chassis’s subtle wedges and smooth curves.
