How to Enable Clipboard History on Android (Gboard, Samsung)

Android does not have a system-wide clipboard manager built into the OS. The clipboard lives inside your keyboard app, and each keyboard handles it differently. That means the steps to turn it on, and even whether the feature exists at all, depends on which keyboard you use.

This guide covers the three keyboards most people use: Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, and Microsoft SwiftKey. It also explains how to pin items so they do not disappear, how to clear your clipboard, and what to do when the clipboard stops showing up.

Quick answer

The fastest path on any Android phone: open an app that lets you type, long-press inside a text field, and tap Clipboard in the context menu. That shows recent items without opening the keyboard's clipboard panel.

To get the full clipboard history panel with pinning and deletion controls, tap the clipboard icon in your keyboard toolbar. If you do not see a toolbar, swipe down on the keyboard to reveal it (Gboard) or tap the arrow on the left edge (Samsung Keyboard).

Gboard: turn on and use clipboard history

Gboard ships clipboard history turned off by default. You have to enable it once.

1. Open any app with a text field (Messages, Notes, Chrome's address bar).
2. Tap the text field to bring up Gboard.
3. In the toolbar above the keyboard, tap the clipboard icon (looks like a small clipboard). If you do not see it, tap the three-dot menu on the right end of the toolbar and look for Clipboard.
4. Tap Turn on when Gboard asks if you want to enable clipboard history.
5. Gboard now shows a panel with everything you have copied, from newest to oldest.

To copy from the clipboard panel: tap any item to paste it at the cursor position. You can also tap and hold to see options.

To search clipboard items: Gboard does not have a search bar in the clipboard panel. If you have a lot of items, scroll to find what you need or use the pin system to keep important snippets at the top.

Pinning an item: tap the item to select it, then tap the pin icon (pushpin) that appears at the top of the panel. Pinned items appear in a separate row at the top and are never auto-deleted.

Deleting an item: swipe left or right on any item to remove it. Tap Edit (pencil icon) to select multiple items and delete them together. Tap Clear all to wipe everything that is not pinned.

Samsung Keyboard and One UI clipboard

Samsung Keyboard handles clipboard differently from Gboard. On recent One UI versions (One UI 4 and later), clipboard history is on by default. You do not need to enable it manually.

1. Open any text field to bring up Samsung Keyboard.
2. Tap the clipboard icon in the keyboard toolbar (it looks like two overlapping squares or a clipboard). If the toolbar is hidden, tap the small arrow on the left edge of the keyboard to expand it.
3. The clipboard panel opens and shows your recent copies.

Samsung Edge Panel clipboard: On some Samsung devices, a clipboard panel is available in the Edge Panel (swipe the Edge Panel handle on the side of the screen). Check Settings > Display > Edge panels > Clipboard to see if this is available on your device and One UI version.

Pinning in Samsung Keyboard: tap the pin icon on any clipboard item to keep it at the top of the list. Samsung does not impose a one-hour auto-delete like Gboard, but pinned items are still useful for things you copy often.

Clearing Samsung clipboard: long-press any item to enter selection mode. Select what you want to remove and tap Delete. There is also a Delete all option.

SwiftKey, Microsoft SwiftKey and other keyboards

Microsoft SwiftKey stores clipboard items under its own settings menu rather than a toolbar icon.

1. Open SwiftKey's settings: tap the gear icon in the SwiftKey toolbar, or go to Settings > System > Language & input > On-screen keyboard > SwiftKey.
2. Tap Clipboard.
3. Toggle Clipboard history on.
4. Paste something from another app or copy text on your screen. The clipboard icon in the SwiftKey toolbar will now show saved items.

SwiftKey's Microsoft account sync is useful if you work across an Android phone and a Windows PC. Anything you copy on one device shows up on the other in the SwiftKey clipboard panel.

Pin, delete and clear clipboard items

These actions work similarly across keyboards, with small differences in the UI.

Pinning: a pinned item stays in your clipboard history indefinitely, regardless of auto-delete rules. Use it for things you copy often: a home address, an email template, a tracking number.

Swipe to delete (Gboard): swipe an item left or right in the clipboard panel. A trash icon confirms the deletion.

Delete on Samsung Keyboard: long-press an item, select others if needed, then tap the delete icon.

Clear all unpinned items: in Gboard, tap Edit in the clipboard panel, then Clear all. In Samsung Keyboard, use the overflow menu in the clipboard panel. This leaves pinned items intact.

Best clipboard manager apps for Android

The built-in keyboard clipboards cover most people. If you need cross-device sync not tied to SwiftKey, unlimited history, or folder organization, a dedicated clipboard manager makes sense.

Clipboard manager apps from the Play Store can save unlimited items, organize clips into folders, and offer a floating bubble so you can paste without switching apps. Search the Play Store for "clipboard manager" and check recent reviews before installing.

Clipper (free with paid tier) is another popular option that has been around for years. It syncs via Dropbox and supports custom labels on saved clips.

For most users the keyboard's built-in clipboard is enough. A third-party app is worth it only if you copy dozens of items daily across multiple apps and devices.

Clipboard privacy: passwords and sensitive text

Android 13 and later shows a toast notification at the bottom of the screen whenever an app reads your clipboard. This makes it visible when an app silently reads what you copied. You cannot block specific apps from reading the clipboard, but the notification at least tells you when it happens.

Android 12 and later also clears the clipboard content from Android's internal record after a short delay, but the keyboard app's history panel may still hold the copied text for longer. If you copy something sensitive, open the keyboard clipboard panel and delete that item manually.

If you are concerned about clipboard privacy, go to Settings > Privacy and look for a Clipboard access or Show clipboard access toggle. This varies by manufacturer but is present on many devices running Android 13 and newer.

Clipboard not showing up or not working

Your keyboard is not the default. Go to Settings > System > Language & input > Default keyboard (path varies by manufacturer) and confirm the keyboard you expect is selected. The clipboard panel only works for the active keyboard.

Feature is toggled off. On Gboard, the clipboard toggle inside the panel may have been turned off. Open the clipboard panel and tap Turn on again. On SwiftKey, revisit Settings > Clipboard and confirm the toggle is on.

An app is blocking paste. Some banking and payment apps disable paste for security reasons. If you cannot paste but the clipboard panel shows the item, the app is blocking it, not Android. You cannot override this without third-party tools.

Keyboard cache or data issue. If the clipboard panel shows nothing or crashes, try clearing the keyboard app's cache: Settings > Apps > Gboard (or Samsung Keyboard) > Storage & cache > Clear cache. This does not delete saved text; it only clears temporary files.

Restart the keyboard. Force-stop the keyboard app from Settings > Apps, then open a text field again. The keyboard restarts fresh.

Android version limit. Clipboard history as a keyboard feature requires no specific Android version, but some very old Android skins (before Android 9) may not support it in older keyboard versions. Update Gboard or SwiftKey via the Play Store if the feature is missing.
