Is YouTube Premium Worth It in 2026? Honest Verdict

Amit YadavAmit Yadav··10 min read
YouTube and YouTube Music logos above the words Is YouTube Premium worth it with a $15.99 price tag

YouTube Premium costs $15.99 a month in the US after the April 2026 price rise, or $159.99 a year. For that you get YouTube without ads, background play, downloads and YouTube Music Premium. There is also Premium Lite at $8.99, which since February 2026 includes background play and downloads for most videos but no music.

Whether it is worth it comes down to three questions: how much YouTube you watch, whether you already pay for Spotify or Apple Music, and how many people in your home would share a Family plan. This guide runs the numbers on each.

The fine print

  • Lite is "most" videos, not all. Music videos, music content and Shorts still show ads on Lite, and background play and downloads exclude music. If you play music on YouTube, Lite will feel broken.
  • Family means one household. YouTube checks that family members share a home address. Splitting a Family plan with friends in other cities can get members removed.
  • Ads on YouTube TV and partner channels are separate. Premium removes ads from YouTube videos, not from live TV channels in YouTube TV or Primetime Channels.
  • Sponsor segments stay. Premium removes YouTube's ads, not the sponsorship reads creators put into their own videos. Premium's "jump ahead" button helps skip them.
  • The annual plan is only offered for Individual and is sometimes only shown on the web or during promotions.

The value maths

YouTube Premium is really two products: ad-free YouTube and a music streaming service. Price them separately and the bundle looks different.

What you would otherwise pay forMonthly
Spotify Premium Individual$12.99
YouTube Music Premium alone$11.99
YouTube Premium Individual (videos plus music)$15.99
Extra cost of ad-free video if you would buy a music service anyway$3.00 to $4.00

If you would pay for Spotify anyway, switching to YouTube Premium costs you $3 a month more to remove ads from all of YouTube. That is the strongest argument for it. If you would never pay for music, you are paying $15.99 just to skip ads, and Lite at $8.99 covers most of that.

Yearly cost and break-even

PlanMonthly x 12Annual priceSavesBreak-even
Individual$191.88$159.99$31.8911 months
Family (6 people)$323.88$53.98 per person per year
Student$107.88
Lite$107.88

The Individual annual plan costs almost exactly ten months of the monthly price. If you are sure you will keep Premium for a year, it saves about $32.

What about ad blockers?

Ad blockers in a desktop browser still work some of the time, but YouTube has been fighting them since 2023 with warnings, playback blocks and slower loading for detected blockers. On phones and TVs, which is where most viewing happens, they mostly do not work at all. Using a VPN to buy Premium in a cheaper country breaks YouTube's terms, and YouTube has cancelled memberships that did it. If you want ad-free YouTube reliably on every device, Premium is the only legitimate route. For downloading individual videos you own the rights to, see our YouTube download guide.

What YouTube users say on Reddit

From r/youtube, r/YoutubeMusic and r/cordcutters:

Complaints:

  • More ads on free YouTube. The most common reason people say they gave in and subscribed: longer unskippable ads and more mid-rolls, plus the 2023 ad blocker crackdown.
  • The 2026 price rise, especially the $4 jump on Family, which pushed some households to Lite.
  • Family household checks that removed members who live elsewhere.
  • YouTube Music's quality compared with Spotify: weaker recommendations for some, and no Spotify-style social features.

Praise:

  • "The best subscription I pay for." Heavy viewers repeatedly say Premium is the one service they would keep if forced to cut back.
  • Background play and downloads on phones, which turn YouTube into a podcast and lecture player.
  • Supporting creators. Premium revenue is shared with creators based on watch time, and creators say a Premium view often earns more than an ad-supported one.
  • YouTube Music's catalog, which includes covers, live sets and remixes that are not on Spotify.

FAQs

How much is YouTube Premium in 2026?

In the US, Individual is $15.99 a month or $159.99 a year, Family is $26.99, Student is $8.99 and Premium Lite is $8.99. The current prices started on April 10, 2026.

What is the difference between YouTube Premium and Premium Lite?

Premium removes ads from everything, includes YouTube Music Premium, and adds background play and downloads for all videos. Lite at $8.99 removes ads from most videos and, since February 2026, adds background play and downloads for most non-music videos, but has no music, and music and Shorts still show ads.

Does YouTube Premium include YouTube Music?

Yes. Individual, Family and Student all include YouTube Music Premium. Premium Lite does not.

How many people can use a YouTube Premium Family plan?

The family manager plus up to five members, so six people in total. Everyone must live in the same household.

Is YouTube Premium worth it if I have Spotify?

Probably not the full plan. If you are keeping Spotify, Premium Lite at $8.99 gives you ad-free videos for most content. If you are willing to switch music services, full Premium at $15.99 costs only $3 more than Spotify and covers both.

Is there a YouTube Premium free trial?

YouTube usually offers a one-month free trial to accounts that have not had Premium before, and sometimes longer trials during promotions. The trial converts to a paid plan unless you cancel.

Does YouTube Premium remove sponsor segments?

No. It removes YouTube's ads, not sponsorships that creators read inside their videos. The "jump ahead" feature can help skip to the most-watched part.
