Maybe you checked your email on a hotel lobby computer and walked away. Maybe your old phone went to a trade-in kiosk still signed in. Or you just want Gmail off a device for a while.
Whatever the reason, there is one thing to know first: you do not need the device in your hand to sign it out. Google lets you kick any phone, tablet or computer off your account from wherever you are.
- On a computer in front of you: click your profile picture at the top right of Gmail, then Sign out.
- On a device you cannot reach: go to myaccount.google.com/device-activity, pick the device and click Sign out.
The rest of this guide covers every device, including the one people get stuck on: the Gmail app on a phone, which has no Sign out button at all.
Sign out of Gmail on a computer
This works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on Windows, Mac and Chromebook.
- Open Gmail in your browser.
- Click your profile picture (or initial) at the top right.
- Click Sign out.
If you are signed in to more than one Google Account in that browser, the button says Sign out of all accounts. Google does not let you sign out of just one of several accounts in the same browser from this menu. It signs out all of them, and you sign back in to the ones you want to keep.
Signing out of Gmail signs you out of the whole Google Account in that browser. YouTube, Google Drive and Google Docs sign out too.
Sign out of Gmail remotely (lost phone, someone else's PC)
This is the one to know. You can do it from any browser, or from the Google settings on your phone.
- Go to your Google Account. In Gmail, click your profile picture, then Manage your Google Account.
- Click Security & sign-in (labelled Security in some regions) in the left menu.
- Scroll to Your devices and click Manage all devices.
- Click the device you want to sign out. Google shows its type, its rough location and when it was last active.
- Click Sign out, and confirm.
That device loses access to your Google Account, including Gmail, within a short while. If the same device appears more than once (for example the Chrome browser and the Gmail app on the same phone), sign out of each entry.
Do not recognise a device in the list? Click it, choose Don't recognize this device?, and Google takes you straight through changing your password and checking your security settings.
Sign out of Gmail on an Android phone
Here is the confusing part. The Gmail app on Android has no Sign out button, because on Android your Google Account is shared by the whole phone: Play Store, Photos, Contacts, Calendar and the rest. To get Gmail off the phone, you remove the account.
Remove the account from the Gmail app
- Open the Gmail app and tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Tap Manage accounts on this device.
- Tap the account you want to remove.
- Tap Remove account, then confirm.
Remove the account from the phone's settings
This does the same job and works when the Gmail app is misbehaving. The menu name varies by phone:
- Google Pixel: Settings > Passwords, passkeys & accounts, tap the account, then Remove account.
- Samsung Galaxy: Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, tap the account, then Remove account.
- Other Android phones: look for Settings > Accounts or Users & accounts.
Removing the account deletes that account's email, contacts and settings from this phone only. Everything is still in your Google Account and comes back if you add it again.
If it is the only Google Account on the phone, Android asks for your PIN, pattern or password before it lets you remove it. That is a theft protection feature.
Sign out of Gmail on an iPhone or iPad
In the Gmail app
- Open the Gmail app and tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Tap Manage accounts on this device.
- Next to the account, tap Remove from this device.
- Tap Done.
On iPhone, this also signs you out of other Google apps that share the same sign-in, such as Google Maps, YouTube and Google Drive.
In Apple's Mail app
If you read Gmail in the built-in Mail app instead, the account lives in iPhone Settings:
- Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts. (On older iOS versions: Settings > Mail > Accounts.)
- Tap your Gmail account.
- Tap Delete Account, then confirm. This removes the mailbox from the iPhone only. Your Gmail and all its messages are untouched.
If Delete Account is greyed out or missing, Screen Time restrictions may be blocking it. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Account Changes and set it to Allow.
What happens after you sign out
- Nothing is deleted from your Gmail. All your email lives on Google's servers. Signing out only removes access from that device.
- Offline mail is removed. If you used Gmail offline in Chrome, the saved copy on that computer goes too.
- Google services sign out together. One Google sign-in covers Gmail, YouTube, Drive, Maps and the rest. On a computer, signing out of one signs out of all.
- You will need your password and two-step code to sign back in, so make sure you have them before you sign out of your only device.

FAQs
How do I sign out of Gmail on all devices at once?
There is no single button for every device. The quickest way is to change your Google password, which signs out most devices. Or go to Google Account > Security > Your devices > Manage all devices and sign out each device one by one.
Why is there no Sign out button in the Gmail app?
On Android and iPhone, the Gmail app uses the Google Account that is signed in to the phone. To sign out, you remove the account: profile picture > Manage accounts on this device > Remove account (Android) or Remove from this device (iPhone).
Will removing my Gmail account from my phone delete my emails?
No. It only removes the email from that phone. Your messages stay in your Google Account, and you can see them again by signing in on any device.
How do I sign out of just one Gmail account when I have several?
On a computer, Google signs out every account in that browser together. Sign out of all, then sign back in to the ones you want. On a phone, you can remove a single account from Manage accounts on this device and keep the others.
Can I sign out of Gmail on someone else's computer remotely?
Yes. On any device, open your Google Account, go to Security, then Your devices, then Manage all devices. Choose that computer and click Sign out.
Will I get logged out if someone else changes my password?
Yes, if someone else changed your password you will be signed out everywhere, and you should use Google's account recovery at accounts.google.com/signin/recovery straight away.
