Instagram added a native repost button in August 2025, so you no longer need an app to repost a feed post or Reel. This guide covers the native method, how to repost to your Story, how to undo a repost, and what to do when the button is missing.
How to repost a post or Reel on Instagram
Native reposting works on public feed posts and Reels. Instagram credits every repost to the original poster.
- Open Instagram and find the public post or Reel you want to repost.
- Tap the repost icon (two circular arrows) in the row of buttons below the post.
- To add a note, type into the thought bubble that appears, then tap Save. Skip this step to repost without a note.
Instagram recommends your repost to your friends' and followers' feeds, and it also lands in a separate Reposts tab on your profile. If you do not see the icon, update the app first.
How to add a post or Reel to your Story
Reposting and sharing to your Story are separate actions. To put a public post or Reel in your Story, tap the share icon (paper plane) below it, choose Add to story, decorate it if you like, then tap Your story. Story shares disappear after 24 hours.
How to remove a repost
Open the post or Reel you reposted (from your Reposts tab or the original account) and tap the repost icon again to undo it. The repost disappears from your Reposts tab and your followers' feeds. The original post is not affected.
How to Repost a Story on Instagram
Instagram Stories work differently from feed posts. You can share someone's story to your own story only if:
- They tagged or mentioned you in the story, or
- The story is from a public account with sharing enabled.
If you were tagged:
- Open the direct message notification saying you were mentioned in a story.
- Tap Add This to Your Story.
- Customise if needed, then tap Your Story.
Sharing a public post that appeared in someone's story:
- Tap the share icon on the story frame.
- Tap Add post to your story.
- The original post appears as a sticker in your story editor. Tap Your Story when ready.
Story reposts disappear after 24 hours like any other story.
What to Do When the Repost Button Is Missing
The repost option does not appear in a few situations:
- The account is private. You cannot repost private content natively.
- The author disabled sharing. Creators can turn off resharing in their account privacy settings.
- Feature rollout. A small number of regions and account types still have a delayed rollout.
In these cases, the respectful approach is to ask the creator for permission directly, then share the content manually (screenshot or saved video) with clear credit in the caption: their username and a note that the original is theirs. Avoid doing this for content where the creator has clearly disabled sharing.
Why not use a repost app
Repost apps were the standard workaround before the native button. We no longer recommend them: many ask you to log in with your Instagram password, which risks your account, and the native button does the same job. If you want to share content that cannot be reposted natively, ask the creator first, then credit them by username in your caption.
